Be Very Suspicious....

I must say it interesting to me, that two months before the midterm Congressional elections, we are now being treated to discussions of secret prisons and captured terrorists and military commissions for those responsible for 9/11 and other acts of terror. My friends, always be suspicious of your government when they hold a press conference, fill the hall with people who they know will clap at every word or put those in uniform behind them for a photo op and then announce something or admit something. Be very suspicious.

I am tired of politicians from both sides of the aisle making no sense of the fight against terrorism. The President of the United States, confirming classified projects then demanding Congress approve things to finally bring to justice, murderers that we have held for over 5 years.

I do not want to coddle a single terrorist, but if we do not kill them and we capture them, they have to get treated like prisoners. I am in favor of torture in certain cases, but Senator McCain got a bill passed that said we cannot. The Supreme Court has said we cannot do some of the things we want to do...sooo we have to change what we do. This does not mean be nice to or easier on Terrorists, hell no. But it does mean we have to get smarter, faster, deadlier, sneaker, smaller staffed and a whole lot more focused.

We are a nation of laws and while laws can be changed, they usually--most of the time--cannot be ignored and they certainly can not be ignored by our own government. I will say this again; we are not using all the tools we have. We are not pushing all the buttons, firing on all cylinders. When we do and are still not getting it done, then—maybe--we can take the easy way out--just not yet. Bin Laden not being dead or Zuwari not being without his head has nothing to do with torture and everything to do with lack of our political will

Now, I know that a lot of you seem to think that we can drop the Atomic Bomb on any and all Muslim Countries and end this war the “easy” way. You don’t care about the hearts and minds aspect of this war. You had better start caring because it is just as important as the “military might” part of this war. The truth is that we do not have enough bombs to destroy the entire Muslim population. If we tried, we would fail and then those people that we missed…well, we would have created even more hatred for us. You have to get this, until we actually change the Muslims world opinion of us, until we can convince Muslim parents to stop strapping bombs to their kids chests, until these things happens, we will not be moving forward towards victory in this war. More than half the world hates us and while you might not care what the rest of the world thinks, they are no longer afraid of us and that is a very, very bad combination.

How we treat our enemies matters. How we treat our friends matters. How we fight this war matters.

I do not want CIA officers going to jail for doing what they thought was the right thing. If we have spies in harms way, taking risks--be they life and limb, danger or administrative-might-go-to-jail danger--our government is ethically bound to take care of them, cover their asses, give them a safe haven. They shouldn’t be making laws backwards; that is lazy government, piss poor leadership and it does not work.

I do want this war won. I want our men home, over 23,000 men killed or wounded in Iraq is enough. We should not cut and run, but it is long past time that we change the way we are fighting. One of the ways we have to change is how we arrest, detain and question terrorists. We have to because our courts and our government have told us so.

We have to figure this out now, as this war which our government refuses to declare as such, a war that is, is not going away any time soon.

Great piece, Colonel Hunt. You are a breath of fresh air. You are my favorite talking head on Fox News.
Keep on keepin' on.

Nice post Colonel, will you adopt me, I've always wanted to be an Army brat.
I must admit, sometimes I wish we could get all the good Muslims outta Iraq, Iran, ect. and just drop a nuke on em, but then I come back to earth, its just my anger at what they have been doing for years, using their religion and hiding behind women and children.
Thanks again for the reality check
at least I don't go out and kill people cuz I'm angry, thats what makes us different.

Who wants to drop the bomb and end it the "easy way"????

I want to end it the "hard way"!!It's easy to be politically correct. It's easy not to make anybody mad or offended. (In the 90's it sure was easy!!!) It's HARD to do what's right no matter who is offended and it's hard to listen to our military guys and "take the gloves off" as Col.Hunt once hoped for.

We are at war with Iran. If it is not realistic or practical to bomb their nuclear beginnings before those beginnings get farther along, then fine. Let's get people in there to promote the revolution that is brewing.

But, we can beat the parts of Iran's offence to us in other ways. Like to WIN in Iraq! That would be a blow to them. Like to have had Israel defeat Hezbollah... THAT would have been a blow to Iran!

How do you change the Muslim's opinion of us??? What can we ever DO except what we have done and been, as a country. Will they look at our history and learn that this is the best way to govern and to live? Guess NOT!!! The next step would be, how about having them live in a nation where they vote for their leaders and work toward a democracy. Many Iraqi's who are seeing their GNP and economy growing and know the positiveforces of our being there are learning something. (Just seeing how our soldiers behave to them is wonderful). This is a long, long, haul. Do we, Western Civilization, have it in us???

Oh, and when Col Hunt says we have to get deadlier and "sneaker" which I think means "sneakier". I KNOW everyone out there in there livingrooms watching the debates about torture and what or what not our military can to....all say..."Please, just do it, don't tell us about it, just do what you need to do, we need you, we trust you, take care of us, don't ask us to debate how you can do it, protect our families and we appreciate you and your knowledge of how top do it..our lives are in your hands in so many other ways.. fight for us.
Okay, gonna get alot of argument there but you know what, maybe all those people aren't as dumb as you think.

I get no satisfaction at all that my arguments on PC and Collateral Damage have been supported and confirmed by the news of today - that over 100 Taliban "high level leaders" could have been taken out, except for the "rules" of engagement. Rules made to "minimize collateral damage"(which I assume would have been damage to the dead people in the cemetery!) These Taliban leaders can now go on with their goals to kill our soldiers and the Afghanistan people and those in their government.

The problem with becoming 'sneakier' is that if a military Predator drone photo can be leaked ot the press, then it's almost impossible to do anything without being scrutinized by the media. Like the one poster said, most peopel want the military to 'just do it' and get the job doen, but really, the liberal press is so vicious in their vitriol that they have 'spies' everywhere just begging for somethign to go wrong so they can jump in like vultures and rip the President apart. It's a sad sad thing when an American party hates this administration so much that they are willing to endanger our military in an effort to trap our Presient in a gotcha incident. They would rather protect the enemy and ensure that the enemy has every 'right' possible under the sun than to conceed one inch to the President.

yes, "It's a sad, sad thing" oh, wait, are we speaking of Democrats or Republicans? Senator McCain, tortured by the North Vietnamese (who had a little trouble understanding the "Geneva Convention Rules") wants to put our interrigators in the position of holding back on getting critical information with the fear of some terrorist's lawyer proving they went over the line - an easy thing to do when the rules aren't specific (what the President wants to be defined for our guys)

Enemy's Rights? - speak to Richard Miniter on his trip to Gitmo!

Chris Sears, there is damage we do to our guys when we allow this kind of thing to go on...McCain knows that...

What "kind of thing"? THAT is what I want defined. I want to know what "taking away their dignity" means because I want to know if one of our guys has crossed the line and I want the "guy" to know where he must stop, for his own protection. "This kind of thing" is a thing you say, which means many different things to different people.

Grabbing the guy by his collar and yelling at him is not allowed. If that is torture (which I guess it is) I want to know. (Don't tell my kids, 'cause I have tortured them on many occasion.)

Today a compromise in the Republican party has happened, concerning torture definitions. Wherever I read, I cannot figure out the outcome of it!~ I know the Administration would not have caved on too much, but Mc Cain will probably come out with his spin on how he has affected the whole thing. I think McCain and his gang knew Americans were leary of their position and probably were the ones to give up the most. But, I just don't know.

Col. Hunt, I am so relieved, every time I see you on TV, hear you on the radio or read your writing, that your sense of honor during your long career defending our country hasn't waivered. That you still understand and believe that we are a nation of laws, that if we fight like terrorists we become terrorists, and that the whole world is watching is reassuring. I've listened to interviewers set you up with a sure fire softball question to reinforce their point of view only to have you give them an answer that they weren't ready for. Always a pump of the fist at my end when that happens. Tell it like it is (or should be).

Anyway, I whole heartedly agree with this posting of yours. We can be the baddest MFers in the valley of death but we need focused leadership that isn't playing some kind of game with our people and that keeps one eye on the Constitution . We have to win this thing on the up and up or it's the beginning of the end for the great experiment in self government.

Like that Uncle Phil says WIN. With all the criticisms of Rumsfeld and the Woodward book, we may wonder who in the Administration wants to WIN. I know Col.Hunt is not a big Rumsfeld fan, and talked often about taking the gloves off, which Rumsfeld does not do. He holds back, dosn't he? He is waiting for the Iraqi's to be able to do it themselves. Maybe WE have to do it!
It's funny that the Dems rip him apart, as he is really more in line with their way of thinking than anyone else in power. Bush is too loyal to a fault and does not do the best thing, which would be to take one of those resignations that Rummy has said he has given to the Presdient to let him save face, and put someone there who will put all of our resources and powers to win, which we can, and give that person all he needs to do it.

My very favorite Fox personality! I love seeing you and hearing your take on things. A good straight forward approach to common sense issues is rare now a days, but refreshing!

Hi,

So how did you feel when you found out the world is a big freaking LIE? Every American has been fooled. The Constitution is a torn hemp rag now.

It started with the Federal Reserve and now with the uncovering of Stockgate the destruction of America is almost complete. Here is some undisputable proof incase you are just a blinded soldier.

I wish Col. Hunt would write a "Christmas of the troops in Iraq" column. (especially since he was just there!)

I remember a long ago column written by Col.Hunt - actually regarding New Years Eve, which, after tears, ( and writing to tell him he messed up my eye make-up before a party) changed some priorities for me.

For a guy who talks kinda wierd and crazy when trying to be funny on the radio, he sure can express a feeling when writing about a military man away from home and giving his all for us. (maybe 'cause he was one!)

I need a good cry - Mostly because it will inspire me to go forward in the New Year in complete support of our soldiers, sailors, air force, marines, coast guard. Miss USA?? Give me a military woman to look up to and respect! Mr.Quarterback hero?? Give me an Army Man (PLEASE!!) or Navy or Marine!! Let's set the record straight as to who is a HERO

Col.Hunt, What do you think about a "surge"? Are you glad it is Gen. David Patreas? (I'd put all my last hopes on him!!).

Lots of lives will be lost now, no matter what. The end will say "Lots of lives lost that last year but America was victorious". or ..."Lots of lives lost and it is over and all is lost".

Dear Col.

I ahve to tell you sir, as a Special operations soldier, I greatly appreciate many of the statements you have made regrding this war.

Having said that, i have to take issue with you on some of the ideas you ahve put forth.

1. Donald Rumsfeld.

Granted, as an enlisted SF guy I might not be privy to much the infighting between Rumsfed and his generals. By the same token, lets not forget that many of these generals are the same guys that have been opposing many of your proposals.

Why should Rumsfeld have given their ideas greater consideration, than even you advocate!

Lets also give credit where credit is due. There is not a great deal of love for the Special operations community with in conventional ranks. Rumsfeld went out and picked a great guy in General Schoomaker to be army chief of staff, despite the pressure to put a conventional guy in that spot.

Rumsfeld is also responsibe for Special operations getting more support, responsibility and funding.

In many ways Rumsfeld has been good for the army, dragging conventional commanders into the 21st century. And more so understanding that there is a division of labor in the military, an we should give greater freedom of action to those who are trained for a particular task; i.e. unconventional warfare.

I also have to take issue, with this "being tired with both sides of the aile" talk. I have no special love for most politicians, but by the same token, most of the insane policys which have resulted in absurd restrictions have originated on the left.

In addition to that outrage, leftist media and politicians are playing right in to the enemies hands.

You know better than most that counter insurgency is about influence. When a terrorist in iraq sets a omb off in the green zone their primary purpose is to get favoraable reporting from our press, and political soundbites from our politicians. Politicians like Kerry, Pelosi, Kennedy, etc. along with media agencys like CNN, MSNBC, etc. have been wiling accomplises in this, and its getting our guys killed.

There is allot of anger to go around concerning this war, but my fury as a soldier rests allot less with Rumsfeld and allot more with leftists who have been working overtime from the BEGINNING to undermine our efforts.

I dont think you point that out as much as it needs to be sir.

Having said all that, I am thrilled to see a senior officer like yourself emphasize the importance of freedom of action for our tactical decison makers.

in the end I may disgaree with you on some finer points, but I greatly appreciate your support and opinions.

Just dropped over here to go back and see exactly what I have blogged to Col. Hunt. In the past, (Starting not long after 9/11/2001 - but that was actually at another location - where he actually responded to me!~!) Really - I was going back to determine when it was that I said "We are at war with Iran". I guess in order to show when I KNEW we were!

Reviewing past posts, I must say that I was very ASTUTE and very INVOlVED and very needing of an answer. Looking back, I see that I was a very well versed, and knowing contributor.

Col. Hunt is no longer here. But, I learn alot by going back to my writings to him.

I am proud and stand behind every position I have taken. And, I believe that Col. Hunt will, at some point - not here on this blog- but somewhere else- give to us a something to look up to and hold on to.\

Sometimes Col. Hunt will lose his resolve before I do. We need the surge - we need to win-- Western Civilization is in the balance. Stay with us Colonel.

Remember that old Beatles song (Yeah, I'm a sixties girl) "All We Are Saying ... Is Give Surge A Cance" And, from a great leader of the land of the Fab Four...(Margaret Thatcher) "This is no time to go wobbly".

Your column is a breath of fresh air, Colonel Hunt.

Making the Muslims like us may well be impossible. 1350 years of history is difficult to refute. They consider themselves to be superior to us. There has never been any voluntary conversion of Muslims to any other belief. I want us to win their hearts and minds but fear we cannot without all out war and forced rehabilitation.
